Simon Jauncey has been involved in music from an early age,  playing in traditional ceilidh & blues bands in the 1960s to covers bands & jazz fusion bands more recently. Simon lived for 10 years in Venezuela in the 1980s & studied with leading jazz musician Gerry Weil in Caracas. As a multi-instrumentalist he writes & records his own music drawing on a wide variety of influences as diverse as poignant celtic melodies, soulful blues, funky jazz & textural film music. Helias fulfils a long held ambition to play this music live.
Simon also has a parallel career as a photographer working for magazines, advertising campaigns & his own personal art based projects.

Pete Caban needs no introduction locally. Longstanding & prominent member of the Perthshire music scene, Pete started playing guitar in 1965 and has been part of numerous lineups covering many styles of music including Soul, Rock, Country, Bluegrass & Blues. His bands have included popular danceband Lateshift, Western swing outfit Rancho Rebop & the Full Moon Howlers and original Blues band Wang Dang Delta. He currently hosts the Perthshire Blues Sessions at the Green Room in Perth & the Pitcairn Green Inn. Pete also owns & runs Bandwagon Music Shop in Perth.


Leon Thorne studied music at Strathclyde University and alongside a teaching career runs & arranges his own powerhouse 11 piece soul band, Stax of Motown. An accomplished musician on both sax & guitar Leon brings an important dimension to Helias by way of contributing virtuoso solos & banter in equal measure.



Ruairidh MacLean plays fretted and fretless bass in Helias. An experienced and powerful performer , he has lent his talents to many groups over the years, but is particularly proud to play a part in the aural landscapes of Helias. Ruairidh also plays bass in Stax of Motown, and is the co-author/composer of the ever-forthcoming comedy musical, 'The Legend of Scarphmapudd'.

Alan Sutherland  has played keyboards and bass in numerous bands since the early 70’s covering genres such as blues, jazz, folk and progressive rock.  More recently he enjoyed a number of years as keyboard player with the Dougie MacLean band touring extensively in the USA, UK and Europe and playing at prestigious events such as the Telluride Bluegrass and Kate Wolfe festivals in the USA, Celtic Connections in Glasgow, and Toner festival in Denmark.
Along with Pete Caban he has been a member of local Perth bands Lateshift and Wang Dang Delta for several years though more recently has been concentrating on expanding his jazz repertoire at every opportunity.  As the most recent addition to Helias, Alan is looking forward to continuing this journey with the contribution of his keyboards to the sound palette of the band. 


Doug Alec Rees, an up & coming young drummer, has been playing since he was 12 & kickstarted his musical career with a grade 8 distinction in 2012. He has since played in many different bands, toured in Europe and has recently finished his degree studies at the University of the Highlands & Islands, Perth College.
